'Virtues in Us'? is a comprehensive program for the systematic development of character in young children aged 4-8. First created in 2003, the program is a joint initiative of The Children’s Virtues Development Project and the Moral Education Department of Beijing Academy of Educational Sciences. It strives to create awareness, motivation and commitment among leaders of thought, principals, teachers and parents through seminars, public events, academic presentations and media publications. It includes the following key elements:
- A systematic daily character education curriculum for kindergarten and early primary school children including songs, stories, games and art activities
- A complete set of age specific fun and educational teaching aid materials such as, books, CDs, posters, game cards, etc.
- 2 week teacher training workshop on the concept and practice of character education of children.
- Ongoing support to trained teachers and participating schools through school visits, feedback sessions, email correspondence, etc.
Currently more than 19000 children in China regularly take part in Virtues in Us classes in more than 40 participating schools . These children enthusiastically strive to develop a deep understanding of the virtues and to use their virtues to serve others. They delight in practicing qualities such as responsibility, gentleness, peacefulness and unity in school and at home. They encourage their family members to also practice the virtues and even to promote the development of good character in their businesses.
The objective of the ‘Virtues in Us’ Children’s Character Education Program is to help raise a new generation with the inner motivation to develop their virtues and to use their knowledge, talents and abilities in service to humanity, creating a more united, peaceful and joyful world.
